Getting the feels: Should AI have empathy?

#artificialintelligence

The challenge will be to try not to overstep what we're trying to achieve. If you can start by understanding the context of one individual and how that works, then you can start multiplying that out. But don't over-expect right now, because the machines aren't able to do it. And the more important thing right now is to learn as we go. David DeLallo: While we didn't quite solve the data set issue, we did come to the realization that there's an element of empathy that's extremely effective and was achievable to a degree in computers several decades ago.

Entering a new decade of AI: The state of play

#artificialintelligence

In this episode of the McKinsey on AI podcast miniseries, McKinsey's David DeLallo speaks with McKinsey Global Institute partner Michael Chui and associate partner Bryce Hall about the latest trends in business adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). They discuss where the technology is being used most across industries, companies, and business functions; the keys to getting impact from AI investments; and what lies ahead. There's no shortage of predictions about how it could fundamentally change the way we live and work. Over the past few years, companies around the world have been figuring out exactly how AI technologies can improve their performance in a number of areas across their business. But is AI actually delivering significant results? Moreover, what can we expect to see as we move into a new decade of AI use and development? To answer some of these questions today, I'm joined by Michael Chui, a McKinsey partner with the McKinsey Global Institute, who is based in our San Francisco office, and associate partner Bryce Hall from our Washington, DC, office.

How to make the most of AI? Open up and share data

#artificialintelligence

In this episode of the McKinsey on AI podcast miniseries, McKinsey's David DeLallo and Jeni Tennison, CEO of the Open Data Institute (ODI), discuss the promise and pitfalls of open data. They explore ways that applications of open data can benefit society and consider efforts to preserve data security and privacy, promote data discovery, and ensure the quality of open data. David DeLallo: Data--it's the lifeblood of the AI techniques used most often today. Most organizations have plenty of data within their veritable walls to fuel AI applications that improve areas from operations to product offerings. But it's the sharing of data across organizations that could unlock huge benefits for society.
